Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast Augmentation - Breast Implants

Breast implantation is a surgical procedure for enlarging the breast. Breast-shaped sacks made of a silicone outer shell and filled with silicone gel or saline (salt water), called implants, are used.

Breast implantation is usually performed to make normal breasts larger for cosmetic purposes. Sometimes a woman having a breast reconstruction after a mastectomy will need the opposite breast enlarged to make the breasts more symmetric. Breasts that are very unequal in size due to trauma or congenital deformity may also be corrected with an enlargement procedure.

Women undergo augmentation surgeries for breast enhancement after they have lost significant amounts of weight, have recently been pregnant or simply because they wish to modify their physical appearance for their own personal reasons.

Breast Implant types

There are two types of breast implants approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA): silicone-filled and saline-filled. Saline-filled breast implants are filled with sterile saline (salt water). Silicone-filled breast implants are filled with a silicone gel.

In general, silicone-gel-filled breast implants are smoother, softer and feel more like natural breast tissue than their saline-filled counterparts. Silicone implants feel like a semisolid gel, while saline implants are often likened to water balloons.

Implants have various shapes, including round, teardrop or anatomin. Round implants are wider, provide greater cleavage and fill in the upper portion of the breast or Anatomic implants for women who are seeking fullness mostly in the lower breast.

The implants come in shells that are either Textures or Smooth. Textured implants feel like sandpaper. They were developed to lower the risk of capsular contracture. Capsular contracture occurs when scar tissue forms around the implant, resulting in painful breast stiffness. Smooth implants have a thinner shell than textured ones. They may be less likely to ripple than textured implants.

Breast Lift

As women age there is a gradual reduction in the skin elasticity, as well as the stretching and elongation of the ligaments, which are responsible for holding up the breast tissue against the chest wall. A Breast Lift, also known as “Mastopexy” is a procedure to lift and reshape sagging breasts.

Sometimes, it is combined with a Breast Augmentation procedure to restore breasts to a fuller and enhanced appearance, in which case it is called an Augmentopexy. Other times it is part of a breast reduction surgery, with the aim of lifting the breast while reducing their size to a more proportionate one.

There are different techniques offered to lift the breast which the Doctor will discuss with you. The removal of excess skin with the rearrangement and re-suturing of breast tissues literally lifts the breast.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure performed in order to decrease the size of the breasts. Women with very large breasts (macromastia or mammary hyperplasia) seek breast reduction for relief of pain in the back, shoulder, and neck. They may also feel uncomfortable about their breast size and have difficulty finding clothing that will fit properly. Additionally, breast reduction may be needed after reconstructive surgery following the surgical removal of cancerous breast tissue (mastectomy), to make the breasts more symmetric.

Men who have enlarged breasts (gynecomastia) may also be candidates for breast reduction. Exclusively female hormones, estrogens, direct breast growth. Although men have some estrogens in their system, it is usually insufficient to cause much breast enlargement because it is counterbalanced by male hormones, androgens. Upsetting the balance, either by more of one or less of the other, results in the male developing female characteristics, breast growth being foremost.
